"KUBUKA" means “to awaken” in Tonga. It speaks of the moment when people realise their potential and take a step forward to transform their lives. This spirit defines our work.

Mission

Our mission is to empower communities, particularly youth and women, through initiatives that promote education, economic opportunity, and equality.

We work alongside families, schools, community leaders and public institutions to create opportunities that allow people to build better futures for our communities.

Approach

We believe that sustainable development happens when communities are active participants and leaders in shaping their own future.

As a locally rooted organisation, we work alongside communities to identify priorities and lead initiatives that respond to their needs and aspirations.

History

Kubuka Zambia began its work in Livingstone in 2014 as the local partner of the Spanish organisation Kubuka Más Por Ellos. From the outset, the collaboration combined international support with a strong local presence, allowing initiatives to be developed in close connection with the community.

Since then, Kubuka Zambia has gradually strengthened its local leadership and operational capacity. What began as a partnership has evolved into a process of growing autonomy, with Kubuka Zambia taking an increasingly central role in shaping and managing its programmes.

Today, Kubuka Zambia stands as a locally rooted organisation with more than a decade of continuous work in Livingstone.

This trajectory reflects a long-term commitment to sustainability, local ownership, and the development of initiatives that can grow and endure within the community.

Where we work

We work in Livingstone and surrounding communities in Southern Province (Zambia), an area shaped by tourism linked to the Mosi-oa-Tunya Falls (Victoria Falls), yet marked by persistent inequalities in access to quality education, economic opportunities, and basic social services.
